New Suzuki Swift

Suzuki's new Swift  promises to make an impact on the small car market.

The new vehicle has a very bold look that will ensure that it gets much more attention than the outgoing model - and deservedly so as from what we've seen it's a fine small car.

Suzuki have for some time been a leader in the world of motorcycles, and at home in Japan are a respected producer of four wheelers too; but their profile as a car maker in Europe hasn't yet reached the level that they would hope to achieve.  The new 2005 Suzuki Swift could change all that.

New 2005 Suzuki Swift - looks similar to Concept-S

Visually, the new Swift looks very similar to the Suzuki Concept S that was shown in the UK at the 2004 Birmingham motor show and that's certainly no bad thing.  The looks of the concept were completely up to date with bold lines and curves that will set the new car apart from much of the crowd.

The similarities to the company's excellent Ignis are apparent, though the new Swift takes this new Suzuki look to a new level.  These new vehicles are the result of Chief Engineer Hideki Awano who has been pioneering a new design philosophy since his arrival at Suzuki four years ago.

The glass of the new Suzuki has a striking wrap around look.  In profile it tapers from front to rear giving the car a clean and alert poise.  The curve of the lights at the front and rear round off the design beautifully, and emphasise the compactness of the package.

Inside, the design matches that of the exterior - clean, compact and right up to date.  First impressions are that the interior is sporty looking, and yet comfortable. And the interior is very spacious for a vehicle of its size.

Whereas the Concept S featured a 1597 4 cylinder engine, which was mated to a permanent four wheel drive via a 6 speed gearbox, the new Swift will initially be available with the 1.3 litre or 1.5 litre petrol engines, and a 1.3 litre DDiS diesel engine.  The current choice of transmissions include a 5 ratio manual gearbox, and a four speed automatic).  Currently the Swift is available in 5 door form whereas the Concept-S was a 3 door hatchback.

With its wheels placed at the absolute extremes of its bodywork, the new car not only looks the part; it's expected to have great handling too, which is something that riders of two wheel Suzuki's have enjoyed for years.

We can't wait to get our hands on one to give it a proper road test; we'd be even more excited by the prospect of a six speed four wheel drive version of the new Swift; here's hoping.

In the mean time, here's the vital specifications for the new car:-
